Author Name
Roberta Samuels (Author)
Mr. Marlin lives quietly with his lovely wife Joan (not shown here) in a seaside community famous for its recent involvement with Hurricane Sandy. Perhaps you have seen celebrity Marxist L. Proyect's gripping video of Mr. Marlin doing kind deeds and offering in-situ commentary following the dreadful storm. If not, look right. (Please note that the author seeks no consideration along these lines; the Marlin basement was replaced with a finer and more orderly basement at only slight cost to the family.) Mr. Marlin is pleased to note that the covers gracing most of these fiction titles were designed by his talented grandson, Matthew, by day a rising civil engineer. Matthew wisely chose his beautiful sister Emma to ornament covers of The Hallie Whirmser series, the characters in which are loosely based on local personalities. Mr. Marlin hastens to add that his other grandchildren (John, Rob, Jonathan, Shayla, and Riis Alejandro) are every bit as attractive and gifted as the two first mentioned. Of course, he knows such claims are too easily and often made; he has heard similar guff from the grandparents of very ordinary children, and worse. The gnomes, ogres, chimeras, and other social climbers populating Tales of the Great Moral Symmetry are, of course, fictional beings.Mr. Marlin enjoys growing tomatoes and distributing them to grateful neighbors. Each spring, he considers the lingering effects of a prolonged cold spell, should one occur. Will it hurt? How can it possibly help? This leads him to ponder the deeper problem of climate change. And, aware that he and civilization are both approaching end-points, he speculates as to whether they will expire simultaneously in a singularly entropic, mutual (anti)orgasm.Biographical sketches typically describe the author's work history. Mr. Marlin has forbidden this. He now regards his entanglement with the whole system as a mistake. He tries to focus on other things and will not budge from this position, notwithstanding the good advice of his professional publicist. In a similar vein, when asked how he picks subject matter, which stories he personally prefers, which he recommends to friends with diverse literary tastes, how he coerces favorable reviews, which sports teams he follows (other than those staffed by grandchildren), and what movies he has seen lately, Mr. Marlin refuses to comment. He can be reached at jeffreymarlin@gmail.com. But don't expect very much.Read more about this authorRead less about this author

Barbara, an American divorcée, moves to France in 2003 on an adventure of self-discovery. She buys an 18th century farmhouse in need of renovation in a tiny French hamlet.

While settling in and visiting the attractions of the area, she meets and mingles with a mix of charming characters in her new community. On the lookout for a man to share her life, she explores the romantic possibilities of her new home.

As she says, "I am willing to kiss a lot of frogs to find a prince. " In between chipping away at the farmhouse improvements and building a new life for herself, Barbara reviews and reevaluates some of her preconceptions.

There are flashbacks to the late '60's when she was a foreign exchange student in Paris and to her work as a tour guide in the late 2000's shepherding groups around the lesser-known and famous sights of France. The book reveals many engaging tidbits about French life and history as it recounts the story of Barbara's self-actualization and her discovery of the ideal mate.
