“I was born in Brooklyn, N. Y., April 24th, 1865, of Cuban father and American mother,” wrote Luis Senarens in his short 1942 autobiography for “Dime Novel Round-Up” magazine, an early fan ‘zine dedicated to the old “Penny Dreadful” adventure stories which had been extremely popular with kids during the latter half of the 19th Century.By then, Luis Senarens was the elder statesman of dime novels, enjoying a celebrity among his fanboys not unlike Stan Lee in the 2010’s. As the brightest star of the “Dime Novel” authors of the 1880’s and ‘90s, millions of children had grown up with his breathtaking detective stories, his astonishing super-inventors, and his grand adventure tales of every imaginable sort.But before he was an entertainment legend, he had been a hopeful twelve-year-old kid mailing story submissions to New York publishers. Incredibly, his improbable gamble actually worked! Young Luis became a successful writer, selling numerous adventure stories, comedy sketches, and miscellaneous articles to a variety of periodicals. Since all of the arrangements were handled by mail, none of the magazines had any idea their enthusiastic correspondent was, in fact, just a teenage boy.As a Hispanic writer creating stories for the mostly white American reading public, Luis Senarens walked that fine line that minorities must tread to balance their duality as insiders yet outsiders.
