Author Name
Ty Kearns (Author)
Ty Kearns was born in Humboldt County, California, during the summer months of 1983, the same months CAMP (the Campaign Against Marijuana Planting) was created in the state of California. He grew up in acommunity where much of the economy was supported by marijuana cultivation and transactions. From 2004 to 2007, he worked in the construction trades swinging a hammer and building spec-home neighborhoods. In 2006, he won an award for a business plan he wrote for building low-income single-family homes with used rice straw from the Central Valley rice farmers. After presenting this idea at the Collegiate Entrepreneurs’ Organization conference in Chicago that year, he got a loan to build a spec home and start his development company. That home was sold in June of 2007 right before the housing crash. Then in 2008, facing financial difficulties from the great recession, he made marijuana his livelihood. Kearns started from humble beginnings, planting his first crop in the mountains of Humboldt County. With hard work and perseverance, he founded and owned the Humboldt Cannabis Center, which was Proposition 215 compliant, while simultaneously attending college, graduating with a degree in energy management and design. Anticipating the inevitable changes in the industry, Kearns made the bold decision to shut down his operations in Humboldt and move to Sacramento in 2016, where he co-founded SEVEN LEAVES. Since its inception, Kearns has been involved in every aspect of the company, from gathering funding and painting walls to completing licensing applications and financial reports. Today, with seventeen years in the cannabis industry under his belt, Kearns is the CEO of SEVEN LEAVES and president of MTG Investments. The success of SEVEN LEAVES has allowed Kearns to work on the company instead of in it day to day. He has spoken at many cannabis conferences and has traveled the country and to other nations of fact finding and policy journey’s. His passion for the industry and his drive to succeed in the face of change continue to propel SEVEN LEAVES forward. As a board member of the Sacramento Asian Pacific Chamber of Commerce, Kearns has been instrumental in sponsoring the “Cannabis Talks” series and policy and industry study missions to Colorado and Canada. He has also taught classes for the Cannabis Opportunity Reinvestment and Equity (CORE) program in Sacramento, helping social equity cannabis entrepreneurs and employees better understand and prepare for the industry. And he has presented at various conferences on the electrical energy impacts of the cannabis industry on the power grid. Beyond the cannabis industry, Kearns enjoys real estate and is still passionate about construction and building with recycled materials and innovative solutions. He reads books and makes art to calm his mind. He strongly believes in supporting charitable organizations close to his heart. Curious about the peoples, cultures, and wonders of the world, he has traveled to over thirty countries. He is an avid outdoorsman, enjoying mountain biking, river and stream fishing, and meditating in the wilderness. His other passions are picnicking and going on dates with his wife.Kearns is driven and passionate about succeeding in the fast-changing cannabis industry, and proud of his place in it. He believes it takes a union of the Boots and the Suits, legacy experience and dynasty building, for longevity in this ever-changing and emerging industry. With the news of rescheduling, the number of states now legalizing marijuana, an election year, and other nations fast approaching legalization, he felt it was a perfect time to release. Five Hours North. It is time to celebrate history and some of the pioneers of the modern industry.Kearns currently lives in Placer County, California, with his wifeand two children.Read more about this authorRead less about this author

It was 2008, and Tyler Kearns was watching the financial infrastructure of the world crumble, leaving half the people he knew unemployed and desperate. Ty was supposed to be headed to college.

He was supposed to be getting a degree in green energy management, a field that checked all his interests: sustainability, land management, new technologies . .

. But the news got worse every day, and he didn’t want to rack up a mountain of student debt only to graduate into the worst job market this nation had seen since the Great Depression.

He never wanted to be a “grower. ” That wasn’t the plan.

But Ty Kearns grew up in Humboldt County, California. Like any native of the mountainous region, he was a student of Humboldt’s unique history, from the first hippie driving up from San Francisco to grow his own reefer, to the green rush in the 2000s that drew migrant pickers from all over the world and employed half of the stay-at-home moms in the county.

His aunt owned land in the mountains and so, to pay his tuition and get a legit career, he fell back on the industry he knew was recession proof―growing cannabis. Ty scribbled notes in lectures during the week before hightailing it five hours north into the mountains of Humboldt County to tend his plants on weekends.

It was an outlaw’s life. Tyler smuggled the harvest from his grow site to the buyer’s hands with only his kayak to camouflage the clandestine mission.

He faced down mountain lions, shivered in a sleeping bag in the snow, and jerry-rigged showers in a kiddie pool so that he could watch over his fledgling crop. On Mondays he headed back to class to pursue his real, legitimate dreams.

The first year alone, he made over $100,000.   Communing with the land and raising a harvest fulfilled the naturalist in him, but growing was supposed to be a temporary gig.

In no time, he was making so much money that it was almost impossible to pump the brakes.   Eventually, Tyer accepted his fate.

Growing pot wasn’t supposed to be his destiny, but he was excellent at it. He just needed to come out of the shadow of the mountain.

He moved to Sacramento, where marijuana was still in a legal gray area but was much less risky to grow than it was in Humboldt. Starting over, he discovered, provided the gift of reinvention.

Today Tyler is the CEO of SevenLeaves, a fully licensed cannabis cultivation operation with product in over three hundred stores. And his dream of working in green energy is not forgotten: SevenLeaves is powered by 100 percent green energy, proof of Tyler’s belief that our relationship with the earth should be symbiotic, not exploitative, even if you’re an entrepreneur.

Five Hours North is a modern American Green Dream story filled with outlaw adventures, a cast of memorable mountain characters, and one man’s search for a way out that just might lead him back to himself. .
