Gerard O'Regan was born in Cork, Ireland and attended University College Cork and Trinity College Dublin. His background is both industrial (especially in the software quality and software process improvement field), and academic (he has carried out research in mathematical approaches to software quality at Trinity College, Dublin, where he earned a PhD in Computer Science).His academic interests include formal methods, mathematics in computing, software engineering and software quality, and the history of computing.His industrial work includes work as a consultant to improve the software process maturity of software organizations to enhance their software engineering capability. This has involved assessing the software process maturity of various engineering practices in the organisation with respect to models such as the CMMI, and working with them to enhance their software engineering capability. He has worked with industrial companies such as Motorola, Ericsson, Allianz, and EirGrid.He has published several books with Springer including A Practical Approach to Software Quality (2002), Mathematical Approaches to Software Quality (2006), A Brief History of Computing (2008, 2012 and 2021), An Introduction to Software Process Improvement (2010), Mathematics in Computing (2012 and 2020), Giants of Computing (2013), An Introduction to Software Quality (2014).
