Author Name
Sarah Lillo Kang (Editor)
Sarah Lillo Kang is an Associate Professor of Middle and Secondary Education at Southeast Missouri State University. She is an educator and scholar who intentionally situates herself at the intersection of research and practice. Through her teaching, research, and writing, Lillo Kang works with teachers to cultivate classrooms where students are engaged in both their learning and communities. Lillo Kang’s writing is grounded in her varied teaching experiences. As a secondary educator, Lillo Kang taught grades 7-12 English in International Baccalaureate schools in South Korea and Uganda. In higher education contexts, she has taught undergraduate and graduate students in topics ranging from teaching pedagogies, research methodologies, and diversity/equity topics to content and media literacy. Prior to her current appointment, she taught part-time at the University of California, Los Angeles, UCLA Extension, the University of California, Irvine, and the University of Southern California. At Southeast Missouri State University, she works primarily with pre-service teachers and practicing educators/school leaders. Her writing is also heavily informed by her scholarship. Most of Lillo Kang’s research is qualitative in nature and relates to her passions for global citizenship and social justice. She explores topics such as service-learning, global citizenship education, international education, informal support networks for pre-service teachers, and diversity challenges in secondary English curriculum. Her studies have focused on teachers' work in the U.S., Ghana, South Korea, Kenya, Ethiopia, and South Africa. Lillo Kang earned her B.S. in Child Development, English, and Deaf Education from Vanderbilt University, her M.Ed. in English Education from Vanderbilt University, and her Ph.D. in Education with an emphasis on Social Sciences and Comparative Education: International Education from the University of California, Los Angeles. Offering contributions and vignettes from teachers, school leaders, and scholars, this volume purposefully dismantles practitioner-academic divides to invite dialogue around diverse understandings of global citizenship education (GCE). Recognizing that the field of GCE is often explored and conceptualized by educators and academics in silos, this book confronts this issue by focusing on how schools, educators, and researchers can together support the enactment of GCE in international and national settings.

In doing so, issues of westernization, inequality, access, and divergence between GCE policy and practical implementation can be overcome. The novel dialogical format links together theory, practice, and lived experience to create discourses between voices that are rarely connected.

Ultimately, this volume offers important insights for those aiming to make equitable GCE a reality in schools worldwide and illustrates the value of collaborative dialogic exchange. This text will benefit scholars, academics, and students in the fields of international and comparative education, the sociology of education, and citizenship more broadly.

Those involved with multicultural education policy and citizenship in the context of political sociology and social policy will also benefit from this volume. .
