Shirley Skufca Hickman graduated from Western State University in Gunnison, Colorado and later moved to California where she taught high school and college English.Her grandparents emigrated from Croatia, so she grew up influenced by two cultures. This perspective helped her empathize with her many Latino students during her teaching career.She and her husband, Joe, live in Porterville, California.
