In the Caribbean Sea, on the island of three peaks, in the rural village of Sangre Grande, a young teenage girl embarks upon a journey of ancestral self-discovery. In the post-colonial setting of 1960s Trinidad and Tobago, Rhea, a strong willed, stubborn but good-natured fourteen-year-old girl has always been fascinated by the local folklore and traditions subtly ingrained into everyday small island life.

Enticed by whispered village stories, she begins to delve deeper into local myths and legends of the Spirit Lords like Anansy Spider, Mother of Waters, and Father Forest or Papa Bois. However, the girl’s mother, a strict Christian woman, disapproves of her daughter’s growing interest in the remnants of a suppressed past.

Despite her mother's displeasure, Rhea finds it especially difficult to keep away from the ancestral lore and legends when her new neighbour, an old Haitian woman, becomes very willing to humour her interest. What starts as an innocent fascination, soon spirals into a perilous adventure from which the young girl cannot easily escape.

Delving deep into the world of voodoo magic and mysticism, she discovers firsthand the complex connection between the living world and the afterlife. Tugged and pulled between the worlds of flesh and spirit, Rhea learns to harness her newfound powers while navigating the emotional complexities of grief and first love.

To survive, she must rely not only on her newfound knowledge, but on the aid of friends old and new. .
