Dr. Oscherwitz spent much of his childhood wheezing and short of breath from asthma. Repeated infections lead him to miss school often, so he worked puzzles and read about exotic places during those gloomy times. He vowed that if he ever got better, he would devote his life to exploring the world and helping sick people get past their health problems. He became an Infectious Disease doctor after years of hard work, spending most of his time caring for critically ill or unstable hospitalized patients. The puzzle-solving abilities that he gained as a child helped him figure out difficult diagnoses and save peoples' limbs and lives on a daily basis, and many unique and fascinating stories came his way over the course of his career. He hopes to share some of these unusual and entertaining stories with you through his writing, at the same time informing you about science, resilience and humanity.Dr. Oscherwitz was able to travel extensively, and actually visited some of the icefields, jungles, deserts and forests that fascinated him in his childhood books. He was a doctor for archaeologists in the Peten Jungle of Guatamala, took books to children living in a Brazilian favela, fought parasites in China and enjoyed grasslands and glaciers in Africa and South America. He enjoys seeing the different faces of nature and the creatures that inhabit the earth, whether microscopic or whale-sized. The wildlife of the Sonoran Desert inspired Gilbert’s Adventure, a book that he and his son wrote together. Nano incorporates settings that Dr. Oscherwitz visited in Asia and the South Pacific with the sort of medical technology that we might see in the future.
