Tu Tunics is an African-American novelist and lawyer of sixteen years, a former public defender that represented a plethora of juvenile and adult defendants in misdemeanor and felony cases, and long-term prosecutor with a desire to seek positive change in the criminal system. Tunics' love for young adults, reading, writing, and quest for change intersected in the Pipelined series of novels, books that demonstrate why Representation Matters. Tunics is largely inspired by Beverly Cleary, who started writing because she noticed it was hard to find books for young boys, and she liked finding humor and stories in everyday life that kids could relate to. She wrote about real life; but the reality is that not everyone can relate to the suburban, jovial life portrayed by the characters in Cleary’s stories. We’re fortunate that in our generation there are more and more books with characters that everyone can relate to, but there is still a segment of society that is largely unrepresented in mainstream literature. Tunics brings vast knowledge from the criminal justice system into a coming-of-age tale of inspiration for teens.While these books contain some of those same fun and relatable characteristics, they are real, and at times harsh, portraying difficulties, pain, and the consequences of making bad choices.
