Uva de Aragón (Havana, 1944) has published a dozen books of poems, essays, short stories, novels and a play. She comes from a family of Spanish and Cuban writers and continues to write mainly in Spanish, although she has resided in the United States since 1959. Some of her work, translated into English, has appeared in various anthologies. The bilingual edition of her award winning novel The Memory of Silence/ Memoria del silencio, translated by Jeffrey C. Barnett. Chico, (Cubanabooks, 2014) is being taught at several universities. For many years she was a columnist for Diario Las Americas and later El Nuevo Herald. Until her retirement in 2011, she was Associate Director of the Cuban Research Institute at Florida International University. Dr. de Aragón graduated with a PhD in Latin American Literature from the University of Miami. She has received several literary awards in the United States and Europe. Uva de Aragón nació en La Habana en 1944 y reside en Miami. Fue subdirectora del Instituto de Investigaciones Cubanos (CRI) de la Universidad Internacional de la Florida (FIU), donde ejerció el profesorado.

Por muchos años fue columnista del Diario Las Américas. Ha publicado en todos los géneros y entre sus títulos se destacan Morir de exilio, El caimán ante el espejo y la novela Memoria del silencio.

A través de estas crónicas la escritora nos presenta toda una historia de la república de Cuba desde 1902 a 1958. Es una miranda profunda y objetiva.

Se muestran las penas pero también el esfuerzo de un pueblo por la superación y sus indiscutibles logros. Comenta movimientos sindicales y feministas, las relaciones raciales y el intrincado engranaje social.

Desde la Enmienda Platt hasta la Revolución de 1959 pasando por la Revolución de 1933, la Asamblea Constituyente y el golpe de estado del 10 de marzo. Este libro es una lúcida herramienta para la comprensión de la historia de Cuba y de los propios cubanos.

Uva de Aragón was born in Havana in 1944 and resides in Miami. She was deputy director of the Cuban Research Institute (CRI) at Florida International University (FIU), where she served as a professor.

For many years she was a columnist for Diario Las Américas. He has published in all genres and his titles include Morir de exilio, El caimán ante el mirro and the novel Memoria del Silencio.

Through the chronicles presented in this book, the author offers a profound and objective look into the history of the Cuban Republic from 1902 through 1958. Reflected are the struggles of a Nation that wanted to succeed and their many gains and triumphs, while also pointing out the sad pitfalls.
