I am an indigenous woman of Mi’kmaq descent. I spent my childhood with my thirteen siblings in a small, secluded coastal town in St. Albans, Newfoundland, Canada. Despite facing many challenges, such as dropping out of school early, I’ve always been passionate about learning and have kept my imagination alive. For twenty-five years, I worked as a PSW(personal support worker) in the long-term care field and witnessed how storytelling brought not only joy into the seniors’ lives but also helped them reconnect back to their youth. Forced to retire early due to back issues, I decided to pursue studies in Grief and Loss Counseling and Trauma, Grief, and Loss in Children, with the notion of becoming a counselor. However, these courses brought many past wounds to the surface and provided much healing that ignited my passion for helping others heal through writing. To feed my passion for writing, I’ve shared countless reflective, inspirational, and hopeful stories on my blog.Today, I still write blogs from an adult perspective, but I’m more focused on creating stories that positively impact children and promote inclusivity and kindness. Growing up, I was a shy kid who lacked confidence, faced bullying in school, and sometimes felt like a weirdo or an ugly duckling. But as I grew older, I realized that my unique qualities and quirks make me who I am, and I couldn’t be more proud of them today. And now—through the magical world of words—I’m excited to announce that I’ve fulfilled my long-time dream of writing a children’s book with a message of diversity, “Bray and the Adventures of Zorkon,” for ages 9-12 years. I hope it’ll inspire kids and adults alike to see the beauty in our differences because I believe that no matter the challenges, we can consistently achieve our dreams with hard work and determination.
