Author Name
Ricky Cano (Author)
Ricky Cano was born on August 25th, 1985, in the Bronx, New York. Early in his life, Ricky moved around a lot. He lived in the Dominican Republic; Norristown, Pennsylvania; Miami, Florida; back to New York City; Providence, Rhode Island, where he spent most of his adolescence before finally settling in Cranston, Rhode Island, well into adulthood. Ricky enjoyed a range of hobbies and participated in many different sports, from Baseball to Basketball, Soccer, Boxing, and even Martial Arts, while living in Miami. Despite being a gifted athlete with a collegian promise, Ricky had to give up on his athletics dreams by the time he was sixteen to help his mother, a single mother of three, make ends meet. He took on many positions, from a fast-food chain employee, a busboy & dishwasher at a diner, and a call center rep, before online buying was an option. Later, he tackled many positions while working at the State’s most prominent and busiest hospital before becoming a first responder. On February 15th, 2006, just as his young, unbalanced life seemed to be settling in, Ricky was prepping to try out for his collegian baseball team when his life was derailed. A massive brain aneurysm had occurred due to a ruptured AVM, a brain condition he was unaware he was living with since he was born. Since the AVM was located deep in his left brain, a spot doctors deemed too dangerous to operate on, Ricky was treated, then sent home twelve days later with a date to return for a massive radiation surgery. Despite the radiation surgery, Ricky was given pretty much a death date; as Neurologist Dr. Woo stated, “People with your type of condition rarely make it to see twenty-eight, let alone thirty.” Over the next five years, Ricky turned to writing, the one thing that has never let him down. He started writing at twelve, beginning with notebooks while his teachers lectured in class. That led to short stories on his mother’s home desktop. Over the next five years, Ricky had a second radiation surgery and a handful of procedures. He successfully wrote a screenplay at age twenty-five about the tumultuous times during his aneurysm and recovery from the first surgery without prior screenplay lessons. Seeing his creation on the big screen during the Boston International Film Festival fueled Ricky’s passion for writing. Along with a trusted friend, he successfully wrote a second film and casted himself as the lead while also co-directing a large cast. Over the next year, just before his 27th birthday, doctors determined that Ricky was one hundred percent cured of the brain condition that had threatened his life. His Neurologist said, “You’re my miracle man.” Over the next three years, Ricky had written several screenplays and pilots, was casted in a couple of films by other local directors as an actor, married, and became a father for the first time. However, he soon learned that the Hollywood business is challenging. Despite receiving great feedback over the next five years, he couldn’t quite sell any of his pilots or feature film screenplays. The now father of two sons turned his attention to novel writing. He picked out his latest pilot and show, Identical, and converted it into a hybrid book with a screenplay and a traditional novel format. His goal for this book is simple. “The book will sell the show. If it doesn’t, I’ll be a bestseller. I’m going to make it. I don’t know how, but I am going to make it.Read more about this authorRead less about this author
