'Back to the Flood', my ninth book and latest Fenland Mystery, has now been published. This mystery is set in 1249, thirteen years after the great flood of 1236, which devastated Wisbech and its surrounding villages. The death of Alured the market baker brings the bishop’s seneschal to Wisbech. His task of finding Alured’s killer, however, is to prove far from simple. It does not take him long to discover just how many of the townspeople despised the baker and that almost everyone had a reason to wish him dead. And everywhere the seneschal goes, whoever he speaks to, it seems that everything harks back to the flood. This new book joins my other Fenland Mysteries and Histories and continues to involve the Tilneye family which appeared in ‘In The Wash’, 'The Lazar House' and ‘The Charter of Oswy and Leoflede.’As well as writing about the history of Wisbech and the Fens, I give local history talks throughout the Isle of Ely, based on my books . It is always good to go out and meet the different groups and to share the many intriguing things I have learned through my research. We really do have a wonderfully rich history in the Fens, one which never ceases to fascinate me.Read more about this authorRead less about this author

'Everything harks back to the flood,' or so the constable of Wisbech Castle claims. The market baker Alured is dead.

In the midst of a ferocious blizzard, Roger of Abynton, the bishop's seneschal for the Isle of Ely, arrives in Wisbech. He soon finds himself struggling to unravel the web of cover-ups and lies surrounding the death of Wisbech's most hated man.

These are unsettling times. Wisbech and the Fens are still living in the aftermath of the Great Flood of 1236, a time it seems no one can forget.

While earthquakes strike the far side of the country and the Fens are beset by wild weather, floods and hunger, people fear this is God's punishment for their evil doings. Yet this is also a period of hope and rebuilding.

Wisbech is gradually being developed. Until the town's obsession with the past is loosened though, it seems that none of its inhabitants will be able to move on.

It is up to the seneschal to work through the smokescreen of deceit to identify Alured's killer and leave the townsfolk free to look to the future. For indeed it is a fact that in Wisbech everything harks back to the flood.
