Author Name
Karen J. Clayton (Author)
Karen Clayton was born in Battle Creek, Michigan. Her Social Work education, graduate work in Sociology and extensive travel prepared her to do social work and discharge planning in county and private hospitals, be part of an interdisciplinary hospice team, and to work as Director of Patient Education at a regional office of the American Cancer Society. These venues are the sites of many of the stories in her book "Demystifying Hospice: Inside the Stories of Patients and Caregivers". She conducts workshops and teaches about end-of-life topics, palliative care and hospice, caregiving, elder care, cross-cultural communication, social problems, and general sociology. Her interests in art, anthropology, and diverse cultures prepared her to be Educator Curator at the Stahl Center Museum of Culture, La Sierra University, Riverside, CA. Demystifying Hospice is her first book, and she has been published in "Whidbey Life News" magazine and in "Connections" journal. Clayton and her husband, also an educator, are completing a book about learning to live in another culture about the time hey worked in the Republic of the Philippines, in an interesting "slice of time", living under martial law during the Marcos Regime. The book's title is "A Gentle Clash of Cultures: A Lovers Quarrel".Read more about this authorRead less about this author

"This is a book of substance, well researched and honest. .

[The authors] have really shown why [their] information is of use to readers in the 2020s. " -Ina Orme, BS, MA, Teacher, Writer of Children's Literature"Each chapter is a revelation, from the first .

to the last. " -Terese Thonus, PhD, Applied Linguist and Professor, Director of the University Writing Program, Klein Family School of Communications Design, University of Baltimore"Insightful, sensitive, and a great read! Anyone interested in travel or cultural anthropology will find perceptive insights into Philippine life.

" -Don H. Abbey, PhD, Retired Professor of Biology, Retired Field Director, Adventist Frontier MissionsWhen the Claytons accepted the mission of teaching at a small college in the Philippines in the late 1970s, they had no idea how much their lives would change.

Dale Clayton taught science; his wife, Karen, worked and took classes; and their young children, Kimberly and Jeff, attended a one-room, multigrade school. But this simple summary doesn't come close to encompassing the thrill and shock of becoming embedded in an entirely different culture.

Martial law, academic politics, homesickness, and ruthlessly hot weather presented many challenges, but through it all, the Claytons inevitably learned that people are more alike than different-yet the differences make life more vibrant. .
