Author Name
Oswald Sobrino Ph.D. (Author)
I hold a Ph.D. in Latin and Roman Studies from the Classics Department at the University of Florida, with special interests in ancient Roman slavery and Seneca the Younger. My most recently updated book series is "5 Lessons from Great Thinkers" which now includes several separate, short books entitled “5 Lessons” from the following authors: Augustine, Seneca, Paul, Ortega y Gasset (related to a separate series on this author), Wittgenstein, Sartre, Gabriel Marcel, John Dewey, Pope Francis, William James, George Santayana, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Benedict Spinoza, René Descartes, Immanuel Kant, Miguel de Cervantes. Another book series is on Seneca, Paul, and Roman slavery under Nero (two books). I have also written a series on the existentialist philosophy of José Ortega y Gasset: Freedom and Circumstance (2011), Philosophy in Don Quixote (2015), Technology and Human Existence (2019), and Mass Mentality: Updating Ortega's Revolt of the Masses (2019). I highly recommend all three series. (Not recommended because outdated in content or approach: Catholic Analysis 2006 and Unpopular Catholic Truths.)Current authorized publisher: Sobrino Works. You can find my free book promotions on X, formerly known as Twitter (@OswaldSobrino22).Book Preview Videos on TikTok at @philosophyscribe1 & on Instagram at philosophyscribe1; also at Goodreads author page and YouTube @oswaldsobrino333.Questions: sobrino95@gmail dot comRead more about this authorRead less about this author

Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) is most famous for his classic Critique of Pure Reason which is a complex and difficult work setting forth how the categories of our understanding yield knowledge through sense experience. Yet, later in life, he also completed his work on ethics by publishing The Metaphysics of Morals (in German: Metaphysik der Sitten), which was the culmination of his previous writings and lectures on ethics.

5 Lessons from Kant discusses five themes in this culminating ethical work: 1. Moral Philosophy as External Law and as Ethics; 2.

The Categorical Imperative; 3. Domestic and International Politics; 4.

Ends and Duties; 5. Duties to Oneself and to Others.

These five themes concisely present Kant's proposals for morality and ethics. Many of his ethical insights will not be surprising to most Westerners sharing Kant's Classical and Judeo-Christian inheritance--Westerners who, in any event, have also unwittingly absorbed the influence of Kant.

Kant's own method of justifying these moral ideas through reason without relying on religious revelation or authority remains a formidable proposal that is still influential today and will benefit anyone pondering how nation-states should interact and how individual persons should best live their lives. .
